the ones thats dint have the salt on them are for salt water fishing and the ones that did jsut wash under the water o soap needed and use the for fresh water fishing.

hey there, there are lures that are made for all types of application. fresh deep water fresh shallow saltwater deep and shallow. if the lure that you have is a saltwater lure then i wouldnt worry about cleaning it off. good luck good fishin be safe and remember to share the experience

I have used rapala’s in both fresh and salt water. They work great. But I always wash all my gear after using in salt water.

A lot of fishing lures will work in both fresh and saltwater but not all of them. What kind of lures you got? Some put salt on freshwater lures on purpose. Salt impregnated soft plastic lures will work better. I have seen dried salt residues on saltwater reels but I don’t think I’ve ever seen any dried salt left on saltwater fishing lures. Don’t wash the salt off unless you are absolutely sure.

PS: If you saw salt crystals (looking like table salt), don’t clean it off. Salt was there for a purpose and the lure was a freshwater lure.

If the salt looked like a thin layer of dried calcium deposit that was stuck on your lure, you will need to clean your lure. Saltwater lures are not 100% corrosion resistant.

1. Yes lures from multiple species both salt and freshwater can be interchangable. For instance rapala jointed lures and mag lures were first used on saltwater species.

2. water should be effective in cleaning them……maybe some wd40 if your worried about a corrosion issue.

Field and Stream had an article not too awful long ago about people using big saltwater lures in California in freshwater going after huge 15+ pound largemouth bass. I have a buddy that got some plastic shrimp at Bass Pro Shops and used them for trout in Georgia.

You can use them in both, but like the other answer says, you need to make sure you are using the right color and pattern to catch anything. I would wash off anything that has been in salt water, the best thing to do is get into the habit of rinsing off all your gear after you fish in salt water or brackish water. The salt will start to degrade all your stuff, quick.
